Unique Details You Can Add to Your Elopement Day

While elopements and microweddings are already incredibly intimate and unique, there are so many fun details you can add to make your day even more special. I love when couples take the time to add simple things that can elevate their day. Here are ideas of details you can incorporate into your elopement to make it feel most like you!

Write Your Own Vows

Personalize your ceremony by handwriting your own vows to share privately or with a small group of loved ones. This is a beautiful way to express your love and commitment to each other. I love when couples will write or refine their vows the day of their elopement, so I can capture the quiet moment and emotion involved before the elopement day begins. I also recommend couples purchase vow books so they can exchange them after the elopement day. They make gorgeous leather and suede vow books that can be personalized and make great gifts for one another! There is something so special about seeing your vows written down in your partner’s handwriting.

Get Your Pup Involved

This might be my number one way to make your elopement day even more special. If you’re a crazy dog parent like me, you know that your wedding day won’t be the same without your fur baby in attendance. Have your pets wear something special like a personalized bandana, a little tuxedo, a flower collar, or a little dress. And my FAVORITE part of including your pup in your Colorado wedding day is that he or she can legally sign your marriage license with their paw print! How cool is that!?

Choose a Meaningful Location

Another way to add a special detail to your elopement day is to select a location that means something to you both, whether it's a scenic overlook, a secluded beach, or a favorite park. When I have an inquiry call with couples, one of my first questions is whether they have a place that it special to them. It can be as simple as a town or as specific as a spot where they’ve shared a memorable moment.

Incorporate Family + Heirlooms

I love when couples incorporate family heirlooms that tell a special story. We’ve all heard the old wedding saying “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” and family heirlooms can hit the mark on each of these! These heirlooms allow you to weave your family’s heritage and history into your wedding day as you embark on a new journey with your partner. Some ideas of things you can incorporate include:

  • Wear an antique piece of family jewelry like a ring, watch, necklace, bracelet or cufflinks

  • Repurpose a piece of an original wedding dress or suit

  • Use heirloom glasses for your wedding toast

  • Display or carry old family photos

  • Wrap your bouquet with a piece of fabric that has sentimental value

  • Play a song or read a poem or passage that has meaning to your family

  • Read letters or watch videos from family members and friends not present

  • Incorporate your kids or other family members into the ceremony with a cool symbolic element like stacking a cairn

Personalize Elopement Day Items

Your can add personal touches to your elopement with purchased items that have your wedding date, shared last name, elopement locations, etc. These details can really elevate your photos and provide an awesome reminder of your day for years to come. Here are some ideas of personalized items I love:

  • Personalized ring boxes

  • Just married or “We Eloped” backpack signs

  • Mugs with your names and wedding date

  • A cozy blanket with your name or wedding day stitched into it

  • Attire pin or a bouquet charm that has a photo of a loved one who is no longer with you

  • A map of the area where you’re eloping or getting married

Enjoy a Special Meal

Treat yourselves to a special meal after the ceremony, whether it's a picnic, a fancy dinner, or your favorite takeout. Not only is it a special detail to incorporate, but it also forces you to slow down and eat on a busy wedding day1 You can also plan to purchase a custom cake or cupcakes to add a gorgeous touch to your elopement day and share together during an outdoor picnic!

Consider an More Unconventional Element

Some of my most memorable elopement days have been when my couples thought outside the box and incorporated something so cool into their elopement day. Just a few ideas I’ve seen include:

  • Getting matching tattoos on your big day with something like the coordinates of your ceremony

  • Create your own elopement day cocktail together

  • Rent a classic car, ATV, or other cool vehicle for your big day. I’ve even had a couple rent a blue convertible for their “something blue”

  • Create a geocache somewhere with special things from your day

  • Incorporate an EXTREME element like a helicopter or plane ride, chartering a hot air balloon, going skydiving, rapelling or rock climbing, dog sledding, etc.

  • Book a super cool stay in a cabin, A-frame, yurt, glamping tent, earth ship, etc.

  • Take star photos beneath the milky way!

Remember, elopements are all about celebrating your love and commitment to each other, so focus on what's important to you and make your day your own.
