Tips for Planning a Winter Elopement

Winter elopements are beautiful, but they can be complicated. They require a lot of planning and consideration. If you want your day to be magical and memorable, then you have to make sure we've planned everything out beforehand so your elopement can go as seamlessly as possible--whether it's bluebird skies or a blizzard. This blog will help walk you through some essential steps for planning the perfect winter elopement!

Choosing a Winter Elopement Location

The first step in planning your winter elopement is choosing a location (or multiple locations) that fit your vision for your elopement photos. I provide all couples with a list of locations and backup locations based on their preferences.

The location should fit with the vibe of your wedding day, but also make sure that it's accessible and has amenities nearby like hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants and things to do.

Planning for Winter Weather

Weather in the Colorado Rockies can be unpredictable, to say the least. One day it will be gorgeous and sunny and they next can be blizzard conditions with no visibility or views. If you're planning to elope during winter, it's important to take into account this unpredictability. For winter elopements, it's important to have a backup plan for an outdoor location that has a covered element, or for a lower-elevation location that might be warmer.

For larger weddings, I recommend renting an indoor space (whether thats a venue or an Airbnb) even if you prepare for an outdoor ceremony. Planning a winter elopement or wedding doesn't mean that everything needs to be done inside, it simply helps to have an indoor space available for some of the time.

Packing for your Winter Elopement

When it comes to planning your packing list for a winter elopement, it's critical to plan ahead and make sure you buy or rent everything you may need. My motto for winter elopements is "better to have it and not need it than to not have it!" Here's an example of a packing list I would provide for my clients:

  • Dress

  • Suit

  • Jackets - you can find gorgeous white/ivory down jackets or faux fur coats for a more bridal look

  • Nude lined leggings for under your dress

  • Thermals for under your suit

  • Waterproof boots

  • Wool socks (and an extra pair each in case they get wet)

  • Mittens or gloves

  • Hat or earmuffs

  • Hand warmers

  • Blankets

Optional gear for snow, depending on your location

  • Snow shoes and poles

  • Microspikes

Be prepared for rain or snow—you never know what kind of weather you'll get when traveling during winter months!

Consider Guests

You’ve thought about the perfect location, but what about the guests? Winter elopements or weddings add an extra layer of complexity when it comes to planning for the comfort of your guests. Consider having blankets, hand warmers, and umbrellas at the ready in case of inclement weather. Also consider having portable heaters or an indoor space so people can be comfortable.

Winter elopements are beautiful, but they require preparation

Winter elopements can be some of the most beautiful days, but they also require additional planning, preparation and flexibility. When planning a winter elopement for my couples, I always provide packing lists, alternate locations, adverse-weather plans, etc. to ensure we can pivot at the last minute, if necessary.

There are a few things to keep in mind when planning a winter elopement:

  • Lean on your elopement photographer. Your photographer will want to make sure you have the best day possible, so they'll be able to help you plan accordingly. This is especially helpful for out-of-state couples who aren’t as familiar with the terrain, weather, and Colorado winter nuances. I can ensure you feel more than ready for your winter elopement.

  • Keep it simple! While winter elopements are absolutely stunning, don't get carried away with too many details or decorations because it may not work out as planned.

  • Be flexible! Winter weather is unpredictable and plans may change, so mentally preparing ahead of time to go with the flow is imperative for winter elopements and weddings.

  • Have fun! Winter is such a magical time for an elopement, so enjoy every moment of it with the person you love!

I hope you’ve found some tips and inspiration to help you plan your own winter elopement. It’s a beautiful, intimate way to go, and I can’t wait to create the most magical photos for you!
